Where the crown began
2003.
The University of Alabama.
In rooms of thirty or forty students, I could be the only man, the only Black person, and the only Black man. I remember shrinking—hesitating to raise my hand, editing how I spoke, trying not to sound too Southern, too confident, too wrong, too Black.
Then I realized nobody else had to apologize for existing. I stopped trying to earn the seat and decided I deserved it.
